Why I don’t like left wing comedy

It’s not that the comedy isn’t funny- it often is. Rather, it’s that’s the end of the story. It will never change anyone’s political positions because the audience is already aligned with the left. The likelihood of influencing a conservative in the audience to change their political opinions is vanishingly small. First, there would need to be a conservative in the audience – a very unlikely event. Second, that person would need to be open to change, but would they really change their long-held views based on humor. I doubt it. Remember, of the Big 5 personality traits, conservatives score low on openness to change.

The situation is that liberals listening to liberal humor is the definition of a positive feedback loop that creates a rigid information cocoon. Maybe left-wing humor isn’t about making a change in the world, but it’s about left of center people enjoying the security of the cocoon in a world that no longer makes any sense to them.

If the intent of a comedian is to make a change with their humor, then it is imperative that the audience contains people who are open to change. And in today’s highly polarized world fueled by social media, that is very unlikely to happen. I’ll continue to enjoy the humor, but I also recognize there is serious work to be done if we want the America the founders envisioned.

  1. It was pointed out to me by my much more intelligent wife that I was missing the point in this post. She said stop trying to make everything so serious- comedy is comedy and it’s not intended to change the world. You know, I get what she’s saying. It’s okay to laugh just for laughing sake. We need more comedic relief in our lives. All my other posts are awesome!
